Applications

Our energy storage systems can be fitted to several applications depending on your energy consumption profile. See below for a short description of the most common applications while using a battery energy storage system combined with a PV system.

Peak Shaving

A peak load is a spike in consumption which can drive up electricity bills. Peaks put a strain on the electricity provider as the grid load and the necessary amount of power production need to be designed to accommodate them. To account for this, providers raise their demand charge rate. Your highest peak power level sets your price, and depending on the billing period, this charge can be incurred for up to one year. Peak Loads are common in many operations and industries .e.g. dairy farming, bakeries, metal working industries etc.

Peak shaving can be done when energy consumption peaks above the base demand load for shorter periods. A BESS can detect when your operations require an extra load of electricity and discharges the battery to limit your load on the grid. This reduces the demand charges, and thus greatly reduces your electricity costs.

Increased self consumption

A solar PV system helps cover electricity demand during sunny hours. However electricity is often demanded when the sun isn’t active meaning solar PV installations are generating little to no energy. High demands means high electricity prices and thus costly buy-ins from the grid. With a BESS you can ensure that your harnessed solar energy does not go to waste and is put to good use increasing self consumption even further and lowering your electricity costs.

Without storage system

With Storage System

OFF – Grid / Back Up Power

Although renewable power generators are often the lowest cost alternative to diesel and CHP plants, they have one major disadvantage, these sources are intermittent and cannot provide an uninterrupted supply of electricity. This is where battery storage systems offer a simple solution. If more power is produced than is needed, it is stored in the battery. As soon as more power is required than can be provided by the wind and sun, the storage system goes into operation and provides continuous power. This enables an off-grid electricity supply that’s not only greener, but also more cost-effective.

Cost Comparison

Flexibility services

By using a flexibility software it is possible to use the battery storage for selling and buying from the grid to optimise revenue. The main scope is to sell excess energy to the grid when electricity prices are high, and charge the battery when electricity prices are low, while optimising self consumption.

Grid Support services

Manage frequency, reactive power and active power
and balance utility grid fluctuations.

To keep the utility grid working most effectively the supply and demand must be balanced. Due to the intermittent nature of renewables, this is becoming increasingly more difficult. Therefore, BESS are becoming increasingly more important as balance service providers.
